Ricardo Alvarez is a Chilean saxophonist and composer. He lived in the UK in York, between 2010-18.
He returns to Yorkshire and York for a visit in November 2026 and will present up close and personal gig, deep down in Sotano and will include some of his more recent compositions.
Ricardo Alvarez is a Chilean saxophonist, composer, and academic who completed his Master’s degree, PhD, and postdoctoral research in music at the University of York between 2010 and 2018.
Education & Academia: He earned his Master's in Music (2011) and PhD in Music (2016) from the University of York, later working there as a postdoctoral researcher at the Humanities Research Centre and assistant director of the University of York Jazz Orchestra. He is currently a lecturer and researcher at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso in Chile.
Performance & Projects: He leads the Ricardo Alvarez Cuarteto (and Quartet) and performs with Dúo Vértice. His work bridges contemporary composition and jazz, featuring releases like his albums Bar Inglésand pieces like Gitano and Ovalle available on Spotify.
Note on Namesakes: The name "Ricardo Alvarez" is also shared by other notable figures in music, including the Cuban composer, pianist, and arranger who founded the Cubanisimo Orchestra in Munich, and classical pianist Ricardo Ali Álvarez Acuña.
